Here is a mid-month reminder of how poetry can touch us in a way that we cannot explain.<\/p>\n<p>Ranier Maria Rilke is most famous for his\u00a0<em>Letters to a Young Poet<\/em>, exchanged between 1902 and 1908 with Franz Kappus, a 19-year old military cadet seeking guidance for his poetry.<\/p>\n<p>The poem below is excerpted from a new book,\u00a0<em>Prayers of a Young Poet<\/em>, a collection of earlier works Rilke wrote in 1899 after returning to Germany from his first trip to Russia.<\/p>\n<p><em>We grasp You only in what we do,<br \/>\nilluminate You only with our hands;<br \/>\nour every sense is but a guest here,<br \/>\nyearning to reach beyond the world.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Every sense is conceived;<br \/>\none feels its elegant hem,<br \/>\nand knows someone spun it\u2014<br \/>\nbut heaven surrenders itself<br \/>\nbecause it cannot choose.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t want to know where You are;<br \/>\nspeak to me from every place.<br \/>\nYour willing evangelist distorts<br \/>\neverything, and in his forgetting<br \/>\nneglects to look for the resonance.<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;m always approaching You<br \/>\nwith all my coming;<br \/>\nyet who<em> am I and <\/em>who<em> are You<br \/>\nwhen neither of us understands the other?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.paracletepress.com\/prayers-of-a-young-poet.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.paracletepress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/prayers-of-a-young-poet.jpeg\" alt=\"Prayers of a Young Poet\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-173\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>April is National Poetry Month.
