{"id":1599,"date":"2015-10-19T09:55:13","date_gmt":"2015-10-19T13:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.paracletepress.com\/index.php\/origins\/"},"modified":"2015-10-19T09:55:13","modified_gmt":"2015-10-19T13:55:13","slug":"origins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.paracletepress.com\/index.php\/origins\/","title":{"rendered":"Origins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Sr. Fidelis<\/em><\/p>\n<div>The chant repertoire runs the gamut between very ornate, melismatic chants, and those which are simple, 2- or 3-note\u00a0 recitations.\u00a0 As we said last week, many of the simplest chants are the most ancient. The recitation tone takes a dominant role and the others become ornamental. These ancient modes of 3 or 4 pitches are called &#8220;Mother Modes,&#8221; because all other melodic development came from these basic roots.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Look at the antiphon below\u2014a perfect example!\u00a0 It recites on LA and returns to LA. (Remember that solfege came after the fact)\u00a0 These simple cantillations were already in existence. Listen to\u00a0<i>Lauda Jerusalem<\/i>, which then segues into Psalm 147, verses 12-20.
