When the time comes for one of the divine offices to begin, as soon as the signal is heard, everyone must set aside whatever they may have in hand and hurry as fast as possible to the oratory. . . The essential point is that nothing should be accounted more important that the work of God. \u2014 Chapter 43, Saint Benedict’s Rule<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A singular, demanding note,
\nthe bell of disciplined devotion,
\nintervenes in the day. Didn’t I already pray?
\nWhat more is there to say, so soon?<\/p>\n

You. Your name,
\nthe ancient phrases of the faithful
\nfill my mouth. My mind,
\nthe most defiant part of me,
\nlingers over what I set aside
\nto hurry to this work.
\nTo aspire to ceaseless prayer requires me
\nto live as though you were my highest priority.
\nI say you are, yet I resist, internally preoccupied
\nwhile singing psalms so seemingly sincerely.<\/p>\n

Help me. I’m a master of little but self-division:
\nmy body is present, apparently, prayerful;
\nmy attention, anywhere but here.
\nFind me and remind me whose I am,
\nwhat my deepest joy is,
\nwhy I need much practice
\nas well as your forgiveness.<\/p>\n
