Yoshio is from Japan, so in addition to the usual monastic traditions around the liturgies and proceedings, we knew there would be special touches \u2013 flowers in the church, food at the reception \u2013 from his homeland. At the graveside, we always have a special time of telling stories and placing flowers as we fill the grave. In the middle of December flowers are rare to be found, so some of us had the idea of having the kids make paper cranes for Yoshio. They did a beautiful job, and we had baskets full of the brightly colored birds they passed around to all of us\u00a0gathered there. As I watched everyone place their birds in the earth with Yoshio, the antithesis struck me: Yoshio\u2019s soul and spirit were flying to heaven even as his body was placed in the earth, and these birds\u2014meant to soar\u2014buried there with him. I suddenly remembered this poem that another of our members had written years ago. <em>Requiescat in pace<\/em>, Yoshio!<\/p>\n<p><em>With hollow bones a bird learns how to fly<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Not once despising frame all delicate,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>But pushed without the nest his wings to try,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Fast finds the air till flight\u2019s inveterate \u2013<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And pauses not to ponder nor to care<br \/>\n<\/em><em>How fragile are his limbs amidst his flight,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>But boldly lifts his wings against the air<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And mounts the wind all ignorant of fright.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>And so each day, until he dies, he lives.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>He soars aloft, aloud, and all replete,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Content with gifts that his Creator gives,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>His weakness making all his life complete.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Who curses frailty wisdom needs implore,<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For only those whose bones are hollow soar.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.communityofjesus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/OrigamiBirds.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5625933 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.communityofjesus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/OrigamiBirds-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Peace Cranes for Yoshio\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Follow us<\/strong><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/communityofjesus.org\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/communityofjesus.org<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~r\/TheCommunityOfJesus\/~4\/pg0z_GocYP4\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A month ago today Yoshio Inomata, one of our vowed brothers, entered the paradise chapter of his life.
