This week, we turn our faces toward Holy Week and the great sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. We find a depth of riches in the Gregorian chants that come from this sacred season. One of the treasures of the Church is the majestic hymn Pange Lingua<\/i>, whose text is attributed to Thomas Aquinas. This chant is sung to accompany the translation of the Sacraments to a place of repose at the conclusion of the Maundy Thursday<\/span><\/span> Eucharist. The Mode 3 melody gently sweeps up and back in a way that lifts the text and gives a sense of adoration. Read this wonderful translation by J.M. Neale and others, which is found in many hymnals.<\/p>\n

Of the glorious body telling,
\n<\/i>O my tongue, its mysteries sing,
\n<\/i>And the blood, all price excelling,
\n<\/i>Which the world’s eternal King,
\n<\/i>In a spotless womb once dwelling,
\n<\/i>Shed for this world’s ransoming.<\/i><\/p>\n

Given for us, for us descending,
\n<\/i>Of a virgin to proceed,
\n<\/i>Man with man in converse blending,
\n<\/i>Scattered he the gospel seed,
\n<\/i>Till his sojourn drew to ending,
\n<\/i>Which he closed in wondrous deed.<\/i><\/p>\n

At the last great supper lying
\n<\/i>Circled by his chosen band,
\n<\/i>Duly with the law complying,
\n<\/i>First he finished its command,
\n<\/i>Then immortal food supplying,
\n<\/i>Gave himself by his own hand.<\/i><\/p>\n

Word-made-flesh by word he maketh
\n<\/i>Bread his very flesh to be;
\n<\/i>Man in wine Christ’s blood partaketh:
\n<\/i>And if senses fail to see,
\n<\/i>Faith alone the true heart waketh
\n<\/i>To behold the mystery.<\/i><\/p>\n

Therefore we, before him bending,
\n<\/i>This great sacrament revere:
\n<\/i>Types and shadows have their ending,
\n<\/i>For the newer rite is here;
\n<\/i>Faith, our outward sense befriending,
\n<\/i>Makes the inward vision clear.<\/i><\/p>\n

Glory let us give and blessing
\n<\/i>To the Father and the Son,
\n<\/i>Honor, might and praise addressing,
\n<\/i>While eternal ages run;
\n<\/i>Ever too his love confessing,
\n<\/i>Who, from both, with both is one. Amen<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
