{"id":992,"date":"2015-01-15T03:00:36","date_gmt":"2015-01-15T08:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.paracletepress.com\/index.php\/vows\/"},"modified":"2015-01-15T03:00:36","modified_gmt":"2015-01-15T08:00:36","slug":"vows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.paracletepress.com\/index.php\/vows\/","title":{"rendered":"Vows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Melodious Monk<\/p>\n<p>Last week was a particularly special and significant week for our monastic community, because it is the week in which novices, and simple professed members can make their professions.<\/p>\n<p>The<em>\u00a0<\/em><em><em>Rule of Life<\/em><\/em>\u00a0of the Community of Jesus states, \u201c<em>Though in its essence Christian discipleship is a vocation common to all believers, the vows made in a monastic life give that discipleship a distinct form.\u201d\u00a0<\/em> The next page continues on to say,\u00a0 \u201c<em>Following centuries of monastic tradition, membership in the Community of Jesus is built upon three primary vows:\u00a0<\/em><em><em>obedience, conversion,<\/em><\/em><em>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/em><em><em>stability.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hearing these professions serves as a reminder to me of the life-choices I have committed to in this particular place. I think it can also serve to remind all Christians of their daily choices to follow Christ. Each morning I\u2019m given anew the choice to step into the endless stream of the unceasing love, mercy, and creativity of God. The choice is mine to reject \u2014 or to wade forward on faith: the opportunity is always newly presented.
